About eight months ago I switched over to cloth. Now to some of you that may sound gross. I will confess when I thought of cloth diapers with Little Man I gagged. Literally. I just couldn't do it. The idea of touching poop and dealing with wet cloth. Yleck. Little did I know of how many OPTIONS were out there!
What changed? Maybe it's because I'm trying to be more self reliant or "green." Mostly it was because Babe had a diaper rash that WASN'T going away. I started doing research and everything I read said that disposable diapers are made out of plastic. Seriously? I wouldn't want plastic on my bum! Then I read that they bleach the pulp part of the diaper. Yleck. Bleach next to netherlands? I wouldn't want that why would I want that on my babies bum? So then I started buying the Seventh Generation diapers because they are unbleached. Babe's rash did not do any better.
Then one day I was browsing through Babies R Us when I saw some cloth diapers. I remembered reading that babies in cloth diapers tend to have fewer rashes but potty train earlier as well. So I decided to try them. They were gDiapers. I bought some of their cloth inserts and bought enough to get me through a day.
Best investment I ever made. Within two days Babe's rash cleared up. I was sold. I went back and bought some more so that I would have enough to get me through a couple of days so I didn't have to wash diapers everyday.
Now had I been a smart mommy I would have done a bit of research before buying. I didn't know there were OTHER types like Bumgenius, Fuzzibunz, Charlie Banana, and so much more!
I wanted to try some other kinds just to see if I would like them. Don't get me wrong. I LOVE my gDiapers. You can also buy a biodegradable/flushable inserts that I use on the go when I'm not home. I will most likely use gDiapers as my #1 diapers. I just wanted to see what a All - In - One was like.
I settled on buying some Charlie Banana diapers. (plus they have a cute pattern for a swim diaper!)
When I saw this butterfly pattern I fell in love! I can't wait to get it!
I also bought this one in butter yellow!
And then I bought this swim diaper! They had so many patterns/solid colors to choose from that I couldn't decide!
I'll let you know what I think of them!
I'm so excited for them and can't wait!!
So what's it like doing cloth? I LOVE it. I will NEVER go back to disposables. The poop isn't that bad. You just plop it in the toilet and flush. Then put the diaper in the diaper pail until it's time to wash. If it's a bit messy I use my awesome diaper sprayer to rinse the cloth off before putting it in the pail. The nice part of gDiapers is that they have a waterproof liner that snaps in the cloth diaper. So if the liner gets dirty I just unsnap it, put it in the diaper pail, and then snap in a new liner. With the All-In-One (AIO) you have to put the WHOLE diaper in the pail. Some of the AIO have a "pocket" where you stuff a liner in.
As far as cost goes it's about two to three months worth of disposables. I had a friend of mine who was testing it out and decided that after three months if she didn't like it she would go back to disposables but she wanted to use her money's worth from the diapers. She DIDN'T go back.
I'm super excited and will let you know how it goes and what I think! Until then if you have ANY questions feel free to email me at meg dot lebaron at gmail dot com and I will answer your questions!
